Process of creating the horse portrait “Hope” in 4 steps<\/h2>\n

Today, I would like to show you a veeery abridged process (4 steps) of creating\u00a0my newest commissioned work<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I was allowed to draw\u00a0the beautiful Quarter horse mare “Magic Spirit of Hope” (called “Hope”) in soft pastels, one of my favorite drawing techniques (9.44″ x 12.59″)<\/span>! :-)<\/p>\n

For the horse portrait I used mainly the pastels by Unison Colour soft pastels and the\u00a0painting surface Pastelcard by Sennelier.<\/p>\n

With a pastel pencil – and a untiring usage of\u00a0the eraser – I have completed the rough sketch of “Hope”.\u00a0A sketch in advance is important so that you can orientate yourself and to have\u00a0reference points. Therefore, the sketch should be accurate so that you\u00a0don’t need to erase too much later.<\/p>\n

Step 2<\/pre>\n
Undercoat of the horse portrait<\/h3>\n
If the sketch of the horse portrait is\u00a0done and the proportions are ok, I begin with the undercoat. Because you paint with pastels in several layers, the undercoat colour doesn’t match the final colour. Additional coatings\u00a0are following,\u00a0which are “laid over”.\u00a0Finally, I work out the details and subtleties.<\/p>\n

While working on the undercoat or\u00a0finally,\u00a0the fun begins: the elaboration of the details and\u00a0subtleties of the drawing so that the picture will “brought to life”.<\/p>\n
